Oliver Watts – Three Suns
By pages | March 10, 2010
Sydney-based artist, lecturer and curator Oliver Watts interrogates society, politics and the art world. A concern with representations of history underpins much of his work, his practice occurring at the intersection of history and art. A founding member of the Chaser Team, as cartoonist and illustrator, Oliver’s work is often biting and satirical.

In Three Suns he turns to the beautiful beach town of Angourie just south of Yamba, NSW (pop. 170). The traditional land of the Yaegl people bordering the Yuraygir National Park, after settlement Angourie was a fishing town, in the 1960s became a pilgrimage for surfers and is rapidly gaining a reputation as a tourist destination.
Check it out at the Helen Gory Galerie March 10 – April 3.

Vogue Paris Scandal?
By pages | March 9, 2010
There has been much debate on why on earth Vogue Paris could have been “blacklisted” from Balenciaga. Last weeks show was positively free of any of the voguettes, and speculation rife. Roitfeld told WWD “We’re blacklisted. It’s too bad, it’s a beautiful house and it’s French. I hope that it’s not forever.” She also told them that Balenciaga no longer advertises with them, or lends clothing for editorial purposes. Many are saying it is most likely due to recently dismissed contributing Fashion Director Marie-Amelie Sauvé. She is also the long term stylist for Balenciaga.
Marie-Amelie and Carine in happier times
Well we really hope it all blows over soon.

Shoes Shoes Shoes
By pages | March 9, 2010
Well the Autumn Winter collections are nearly done and dusted, and what a season it has been. Stay tunes for a full wrap up in the next issue of pages, but for now let’s have a look at some of the shoes of the season.

At first I was a bit wary of Balenciaga, but on second, third and fourth viewing, I think I am obsessed. It is not a ‘sexy’ shoe by any standards, with strong 60s housewife connotations, but that’s why they are amazing.

The iconic court shoe has had a makeover, with coloured platforms, geometric heels and more croc than one could poke a stick at. The colours, including aqua, orange, mustard, brown and cream, were the perfect compliment to the collection.

International Women’s Day
By pages | March 8, 2010
Women for Women International (WWI) is dedicated to working with women survivors of war in conflict and post conflict societies. Their core belief is that stronger women build stronger nations, and that with adequate access to information and resources, socially excluded women can lead change towards peaceful and stable societies.

On International Women’s Day 2010, women around the world will join on bridges to say NO to war and YES to peace. This will be taking place on the Harbour Bridge on March 8. The following night WWI will be celebrating at Danks St Depot as part of Art Month, with a night of performance and art by prominent female Indigenous Australians Joanne Currie and Kathleen Petyarre.

Jess Hart
By pages | March 5, 2010
After only being back in the country a short while Jess Hart was very much in demand for every editorial and campaign. It seems she squeezed a lot in, over a short period of time, and now her face is popping up all over the place.

First up is the new Portmans campaign, shot by Nicole Bentley. The Portmans campaigns are getting better and better since their brand revamp. We loved the pop colours, and Cockatoo Island warehouse vibe, and now this is kind of Kate Moss meets office power woman.
